Pass Plus Driver Training
If you’re looking for ways to improve your new driving skills after you've passed your test, become a safer driver and perhaps earn cheaper insurance too, you should think about taking the Pass Plus training course.
What is Pass Plus?
Pass Plus is a government-run practical driving course that you can book through any registered Pass Plus approved driving instructor.
The course takes at least six hours and is aimed primarily at new drivers in their first year of driving, though you can take it anytime.
How it works
There are six modules to cover:
- Driving in town
- Driving in all weathers
- Driving on rural roads
- Driving at night
- Driving on dual carriageways
- Driving on motorways
There’s no official test with the Pass Plus course, but you will be assessed in each module by your instructor. Depending on your progress, it might take longer than the minimum six hours to reach the required standard.
When your training is finished, you’ll be sent a Pass Plus certificate by the Driving Standards Agency.
Where to find a Pass Plus registered instructor
You might want to use the same instructor that taught you to drive, if they’re Pass Plus registered. If they’re not, you can find more information the Driving Standards Agency Pass Plus website.
You can also use this service to check that an instructor is registered with Pass Plus. To do this, you’ll need their name and Approved Driving Instructor number.
What does it cost?
Pass Plus courses vary in cost depending on where you live (your local council might run a road safety initiative which offers a discount for new drivers), the amount charged by your driving school and how long your training takes.
Will I get cheaper insurance?
It depends on the individual company, but completing the Pass Plus driver training course might entitle you to a discount on your insurance premium. It will certainly help to show your commitment to becoming a safer driver, and that can mean a lower risk to an insurer.
You’ll need your Pass Plus certificate when you arrange your insurance to prove you’re entitled to any discount offered.
Some insurers only offer a discount if you take the course within a year of passing your test, whilst others might extend the discount for longer – it’s worth checking with the insurer.
